Big Companies Should Collaborate with Startups. Campbell, the food company best known for its soups, is investing $125 million in a venture fund to help finance food startups, according to the Wall Street Journal. Other large consumer companies are doing the same. They share a motive: Growth is brochure, increasingly hard to come by, so large companies are increasingly looking to entrepreneurs to help them find it. Wide Sargasso Sea Thesis. Consider the numbers. Over the last four years, the travel brochure entire U.S. grocery store’s entire food and essay for economics, beverage category grew just 2.3% a year. Travel. The largest 25 food and beverage companies contributed only 0.1% of suicide essays, that annual growth rate. Who drove the growth? It came from 20,000 small companies outside of the top 100, which together saw revenue grow by $17 billion dollars.
Despite that aggregate revenue growth, not every startup is successful — in fact, the vast majority will fail. Ironically, startups and established companies would both improve their success rates if they collaborated instead of brochure assignment, competed. Startups and established companies bring two distinct and equally integral skills to types of case in psychology the table. Startups excel at giving birth to successful proof of assignment, concepts; larger companies are much better at successfully scaling proof of concepts. Startups are better at detecting and unlocking emerging and latent demand.
But they often stumble at scaling their proof of concept, not only extended essay for economics because they’re often doing it for the first time, but also because the skills necessary for creating are not the same as scaling. Startups must be agile and adapt their value proposition several times until they get it right. According to Forbes, 58% of startups successfully figure out a clear market need for what they have. In contrast, big companies often end up launching things they can make, not what people want. Successful established companies are focused on brochure, increasing scale and are often better at scaling proof of concepts than creating new products from scratch. They have huge advantages in procurement, distribution, and manufacturing, as well as sales and marketing advantages.
But they have a challenge not only extended creating a proof of concept, but leaving it alone until it is ready to scale. Brochure. Entrepreneurship for the Long Term. Large companies can assist and gain access to startups’ prowess at creating proof of concepts via early-stage funding and later-stage MA. But ideally these relationships are more than just financial and transactional. That’s because capital is amy tan, abundant, and there are more buyers than sellers; if the travel assignment first time an established company is made aware of suicide essays, a startup is by receiving a deal book from an investment banker, it’s already too late.
Moreover, established companies that try to win by making the biggest bid will hurt themselves by driving acquisition multiples even higher. Successful collaboration between startups and brochure assignment, established companies must go beyond financial deals: it must be personal and mission-oriented. Personal knowledge is the introductory lines for essays first place to start. Most times, established companies are woefully unaware of startups. These companies are too small and fly under their radar. Big-company executives must choose to become personally more aware of new, growing companies. Brochure Assignment. This is actually easier than it sounds, because areas of emerging and latent demand are often highly concentrated. Suicide Essays. A consumer packaged goods executive should regularly spend time in Boulder, Colorado and Austin, Texas, a couple of the hothouses of travel, consumer packaged goods startups.
They should take their teams and two kinds amy tan, regularly walk the aisles of Whole Foods, which is as much a greenhouse incubator of the travel brochure hottest new brands as it is a retailer. They should explore up and coming datasets. SPINs is a retail measurement company that covers the natural and organic grocers. Yet too many companies don’t even bother to acquire this data because they dismiss it as too small to matter. Just as important as personal knowledge are personal relationships.
A McKinsey global survey notes that CEOs spend about 17% of their time with customers. Types In Psychology. Not only should that number be higher, but the mix needs to skew more toward emerging customers. The community of entrepreneurs is also very tightly knit. Brochure. Building personal relationships within these communities is essential. It’s also vital to connect with key people who have tight connections with both startups and established companies in your industry. For example, one of us (Steve) was successful at big companies (ConAgra, Tropicana) and also smaller companies (White Wave, Boulder Brands). Reach out to executives like these to help you navigate and build relationships in these communities. Finally, collaboration needs to introductory lines for essays be mission-oriented, meaning it has to be focused on travel assignment, something larger than financial success.
Within both the startup and established companies, there are missionaries and mercenaries. Introductory For Essays. For successful collaboration between a startup and established company, correctly match-making like mindsets is critical. But beyond that, our experience is that missionary mindsets have more upside than a mercenary mindset. A missionary mindset provides protection to a proof of concept that is brochure, being scaled or sold in an established company or as a startup. Steve has personal experience around building a new brand in a mission-oriented fashion. Mike Harper, the extended for economics former CEO of ConAgra, had a heart attack in 1986.
It caused him to want to improve his lifestyle, but also put him on a mission to create a heart-healthy food brand: Healthy Choice. He anointed Steve, who’d previously worked at travel brochure assignment, ConAgra and Tropicana, as the “brand mama” who helped grow this from launch to over $1 billion dollars in a few years. Much of types study in psychology, its success was due to Mike protecting Steve and allowing him to adhere to the mission of the brand and grow the business without the assignment usual “organ rejection” that can happen in a new company. Lines For Essays. Later, when Steve was CEO of Boulder Brands, he acquired Udi’s, a gluten-free brand, for $125 million. When he bought it in 2012 it had $93 million in revenue. Three years later, it had $300 million in assignment revenue, as Steve adhered to types of case study in psychology its mission of providing delicious, safe food for gluten-intolerant consumers.
In fact, on travel brochure assignment, each of Boulder Brand’s acquisitions — Smart Balance, Earth Balance, Glutino’s, and suicide essays, Evol — Steve retained key leadership teams and founders to ensure the mission and DNA of each brand was retained as the travel brochure Boulder Brand’s platform was leveraged to drive scale. Executives who wish to tap into the growth of these smaller companies will find that having a big checkbook is not going to be enough, and that waiting for an investment banker to bring them deals is the wrong approach. A mercenary mindset will only go so far. When big companies try to engage with startups, a missionary mindset will create better odds of success. Steve Hughes is CEO of types in psychology, Sunrise Strategic Partners, a private equity firm for emerging food and beverage businesses.
Steve is founder and former CEO of Boulder Brands and former CEO of Celestial Seasonings.

Birth rates are falling in developed countries. There is one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and too self-centred to have children. And this is particularly true of women. To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence. Countries in types study in psychology the developed world have seen a big shift in attitudes to population growth. Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to reduce their populations.
Nowadays, however, the concern is the reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and assignment that urgent action is needed to encourage people to have more children. But what are the causes of this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to lines for essays, blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash. My argument will be that to hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful. The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by brochure assignment, the young.
The birth rate has fallen dramatically in suicide essays many parts of the world. To take several examples, in Europe in assignment 1960, the total fertility rate (TFR) was about 2.6 births per female, but in extended 1996 it had fallen to 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to assignment, below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and thus there is a net population decline. This ageing of the population has the potential to create serious problems. Fewer children being born means that in the long term, a smaller proportion of the populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and economically dependent - in the form of pension, health care and other social services. International Scholarships? Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and brochure assignment economic decline in the future (Chesnais, 1998). So what are the causes of sargasso this trend and what can be done to stop it? One common approach has been to lay the blame on young people and their supposedly self-centred values. It is argued that in developed societies, we now live in a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to assignment, be so concerned about basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a).
Thus people, especially the young, have become more focussed on the values of international self-realisation and travel brochure the satisfaction of personal preferences, at the expense of traditional values like raising a family. Lines For Essays? A strong version of this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) . He uses the term parasite singles to travel, refer to grown children in their 20s and 30s who have left school and are employed, but remain unmarried and continue live at international essay, home with their parents. These young people are spoilt, he says, and interested only in their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping. According to Yamada , it is travel assignment this focus on self, more than any other factor, that is responsible for Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). In other developed countries, there is a similar tendency for wide, the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and a similar tendency for older people to interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a). But is it reasonable to attribute the baby crash to the pleasure-seeking values of the young?
The problem with this view is that whenever young people are surveyed about their attitudes to family, not only do they say they want to brochure assignment, have children, they also express preferences for family sizes that are, on average, above the replacement level (McDonald, 2000a). As an example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to have an average of 2.33 children in their lifetime. Findings like this suggest that the values of the young are not at all incompatible with the idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to be parents. Some conservative thinkers believe the main obstacle is the introductory lines for essays, changed role and status of women (eg. Norton, 2003). Travel? According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and motherhood less attractive. Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and international scholarships childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. It is claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in itself - has had the brochure, unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability. But there are several problems with this argument.
For one, the lowest TFRs in of case study in psychology Europe are found in Spain and travel Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to essay two kinds, women. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Travel Brochure? Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to this contrast as the feminist paradox and concludes that empowerment of introductory for essays women [actually] ensures against a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to link improved education levels for women to low birth rates is that fertility in travel developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels. Extended Essay For Economics? In a recent survey of assignment Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of partnering is now converging towards that of tertiary educated women. We can summarise the discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in spite of what#039;s said about their values, still express a desire to have children. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and career opportunities for suicide essays, women does not seem to be the decisive factor in reducing the number of children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved.
Many writers are now pointing to a different factor - the economic condition of young people and brochure assignment their growing sense of scholarships insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in Australia: Evidence, causes and policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of having a child. One type of thinking is what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the travel assignment, relative costs and lines benefits associated with becoming a parent. In traditional societies, there has usually been an travel brochure, economic benefit in having children because they can be a source of labour to help the essay two kinds amy tan, family. Assignment? In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and sargasso so, it is argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for brochure, example, enjoying the status of of case study in psychology being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to love you, having offspring who will carry on the family name etc. The problem, McDonald suggests, is travel assignment that for many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits.
McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is also unfavourable to international essay scholarships, the birth rate. According to this theory, when we make important decisions in our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in our environment, we usually err on the side of safety in order to travel, avert risk. McDonald points to a rise in economic uncertainty which he thinks has steered a lot of young people away from life-changing decisions like marriage and parenthood: Jobs are no longer lifetime jobs. Essay? There is a strong economic cycle of travel assignment booms and busts. Geographic mobility may be required for employment purposes (McDonald, 2000: p.15). Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for wide sargasso sea thesis, men. Referring to travel brochure, the situation in essay for economics Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in travel terms of perceived costs and for essays risks:
Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per cent of brochure assignment men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in international scholarships this age group were in travel brochure assignment full-time work. Extended? Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12). And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to brochure, Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the failure of young Japanese to leave home and start families is not due to self-indulgence, but is an understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances. Introductory Lines? Genda (2000) notes that it is the young who have had to bear the brunt of the decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and a marked reduction in secure full-time jobs for the young. Young people around the world seem to travel, have an increasing perception of economic uncertainty and essay scholarships contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in living standards over their lifetime. According to travel brochure, a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for their generation to live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505).
Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and introductory around 50% were worried about their future. Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to have children, not because they have more exciting things to do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to provide as parents. If we accept that economics has played a significant role in young people choosing to have fewer babies, then the travel brochure, key to reversing this trend is for governments to take action to remove this sense of insecurity. A number of policy approaches have been suggested. Some writers have focussed on sea thesis the need for brochure, better welfare provisions for families - like paid parental leave, family allowances, access to essay for economics, child care, etc (Chesnais, 1998). Others have called for more radical economic reforms that would increase job security and raise the living standards of the young (McDonald, 2000b). It is hard to know what remedies are needed. Travel? What seems clear, however, is that young people are most unlikely to reproduce simply because their elders have told them that it is selfish to do otherwise.
Castigating the young will not have the effect of making them willing parents; instead it is likely to just make them increasingly resentful children. Ashby, J. (2000). Extended Essay?
